Mobilizing Democracy

With a mobile-enhanced website using the latest HTML5 & Ruby on Rails technologies, this independent international news program reaches a wider, on-the-go audience.

ThoughtWorks led the delivery of a state-of-the-art mobile site that expands the connection of independent news organization Democracy Now! to a global audience. Democracy Now! is pioneering the largest public media collaboration in the U.S. and is now broadcast on more than 950 stations.

“We are thrilled with the mobile site that ThoughtWorks designed and implemented for Democracy Now! It will improve our ability to connect with our growing audience base via mobile devices,” said Democracy Now! General Manager, Julie Crosby.

Taking advantage of the latest mobile communications technologies and HTML5, the new site delivers a mobile-friendly “app like” multi-media experience to users of devices including iPhone, Android and Blackberry, and allows viewers to download news segments for offline access. The ThoughtWorks team, organized through the Social Impact Program, used advanced experience design and programming techniques to create a mobile site with unprecedented user experience and seamless mobile video streaming. With video delivery services provided by DVLABS, the mobile site offers a state-of-the-art “app like” multi-media experience to viewers and listeners.

“The role of independent news organizations is vital to our society and we are pleased to work with Democracy Now! to ensure their content is accessible via mobile devices with the highest quality,” said Craig Gorsline, ThoughtWorks’ managing director for the Americas.
